Top-Level Domains (TLDs)

Domain names (Internet addresses) that we are most familiar with end in a .com , net, .org or 2 letter country-name codes such as .in , .cn, or .ca

These letters positioned to the right of the last dot "." in a domain name are known as "Top-Level Domains" (TLDs).

At Unifiedroot we have created the infrastructure to allow for new top-level domains (TLDs) to be introduced on the Internet.

You can apply now for a  TLD or IDN

Unifiedroot is accepting applications for new TLDs.

There are four types of top-level domains that companies, organizations, and institutions can apply for at Unifiedroot:

  1. Brand name  and trademark top-level domain;
  2. Generic word  top-level domain;
  3. Geographic name  top-level domain; and
  4. Internationalized Domain Name  (TLD's in non-Latin scripts)

The evolution of the Internet

Unifiedroot is not alone in introducing new top-level domains to the Internet. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN ), which coordinates .com, .net, .org etc. has recently announced they will be opening their application process for new TLDs and IDNs January 12, 2012.

What is happening is a natural evolution of the Internet. To accommodate the explosive growth of both the number of users accessing the Internet and the number of websites publishing information online there has been a concerted effort in the industry to introduce new TLDs.

How it works

Unifiedroot has built an independent root server  platform on the Internet that exists in parallel to ICANN. Unifiedroot is careful not to cause conflict with ICANN or to jeopardize the security and stability of the DNS (domain name system). Unifiedroot will not allow a party to register a TLD or IDN that already exists at ICANN.
